Brdfrd on the frutta mandorla pictured immediately preceding and following:
We met the old guy who shaped these by hand. I didn't know the Italian word for bruised, and when I tried to ask him about them, he & his daughter misunderstood me. They wanted to assure me that these were not real fruits, that they were painted to look realistic, etc.For me, their supposition that the marzipans were mistaken for real fruits borders on hubris- - - in the most excruciatingly beautiful way possible. It matches the excruciating beauty of the bruises on these marzipan pears. (Gorgeous photos by Brdfrd)
