Message for Michael: Lagerfeld's Happiness

MC: After seeing the film, would you say Karl is a happy man?

Erk: Lagerfeld would certainly say that he's a happy man, I think. And in the film he seems happy. I say seems because, as the film makes abundantly clear, his value systems are radically different from mine. In my seems, I begin to impose my own understandings of the world-- understandings many of which Lagerfeld would certainly smirk and scoff at. He would likely smirk and scoff at your questioning his happiness: he espouses a consistent disdain for any form of self-pity. By his own account, he struts forward too speedily, too resiliently to reflect. I'm not sure I would say Karl is a happy man, but he seems immensely happy.

Post Script: He appears to have developed a tiny pot belly. Which delights me.

Melt

Amazing spring weather this weekend, with highs in the low to mid 60's. Yesterday, we biked to Welcome to Macintosh-- my first bike ride this year. I had to inflate my tires before anything else could happen.

The wind off the still frozen lake was EEEEEEEE cold but felt lovely nonetheless, foretelling the pleasures of summer air-conditioning and the like. The melting lake itself was gorgeous and alive with pops and squeaks and cracks and groans.

Synchronicity 2

Virtually back-to-back during a recent weekend I watched Hwal (The Bow) and Morven Callar, two films which both utilize headphones not as a sign of isolation or asociality but rather social (romantic, truthfully) intimacy.

The films are remarkably similar in other regards as well: visually lyrical, emphasizing sound track, deemphasizing dialogue of which there is very little, allegorical yet subtle.

These days we so love a good old-fashioned shrimp cocktail.
