It looks like the made poor Wally shave his pits. Do you suppose it was too much for TV in the 50s?
Interesting question. Tony Dow was 13 when this episode aired-- presumably the same age when it was filmed. A 2006 study found that 42% of 13-year-olds show some degree of underarm hair growth (only 8% show full growth at that age). I suspect the percentage was slightly lower in 1958. It is possible that Tony/Wally had not yet begun to sprout. Also, as I understand things, one component of this episode is that Wally wants to shave even though he does not need to do so. If Dow's armpits were shaved, it might have something to do with this.
I only bring this up because it seems that fully exposed sprouts could offer way more sex appeal than the 1950s producers (and audience, maybe) would be willing to handle. I'm impressed by Wally's 13 year old physique, and its no wonder he blossomed into such a handsome young man!
Have you seen the episode where Wally becomes "a thug?" Or was it a "hoodlum"? Either way, June and Ward sure were worried when Wally starting sporting that greasy jelly roll and leather jacket!
