At my last job, I got in serious trouble for teaching barefoot while sitting crosslegged on the high stool provided for me (no desk). Around Amma, I'm barefoot all the time, as it's not permitted to wear shoes in the temple or darshan hall. She plays with her feet all day while giving darshan; at my mid-semester review/flogging, the head of the English department intoned with great severity, They SAY you've been playing with your FEET. I no longer work there.

At my new job, I recently witnessed my boss praise a fellow teacher for taking her shoes off while in session with a student. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Several mothers of my students have remarked on my footwear: always compliments, but I fear judgement.

And of course, there are the bare feet of dancing! I'm so pleased your office extends the dance studio's no-shoes policy to the carpeted workplace (or at least fosters its attitude). these soles seem miniaturized; I'm drawn to the empty spaces where the heels used to be, dark orifices that seem highlighted, leading elsewhere. also striking is the knot left untied.

Which pair is yours?
